Unlimited Class Champion at the Southestern Aerobatic Championships 2000, and Gold Medallist at the 1998 Championship of the Americas, Elgin Wells, Jr., has become a familiar face in Aerobatic competition, and recently he has turned his energies more toward professional airshow flying. 1998 held unprecedented success for him, flying the Meyer 360 in five contests, including the National Championships, and finishing up with two silver medals in the Southeastern Aerobatic Championships that same year. 2000 was his "breakthrough" year, as he won two Gold medals, one Silver and the overall Unlimited Trophy at SEAC 2000, held in October.
Annually, Elgin lectures about aerobatics at the annual EAA Fly-Ins at "Sun 'n Fun," in Lakeland FL and "Airventure" at Oshkosh, WI, and he has become a regular at these biggest Fly-Ins in the world! Elgin built the all-composite wing for his new Aerobatic mount, "Starjammer"," and then loaned it to ATI for use on the Meyer 360 for the '99 and 2000 seasons. "Starjammer" sports a unique, improved fuselage and an engine specially reworked by Robert Armstrong (1999 U.S. National Aerobatic Champion). Elgin can still be seen occasionally performing at airshows in a Super Decathlon. He is best known for his antics in which he throws several rolls of toilet paper out of the airplane and then cuts them up into a snow-like consistency with the wings and propeller. Elgin has performed in airshows since 1993, demonstrating Aircraft Technologies' Atlantis and Meyer 360 aerobatic kitplanes, and showing his championship style in a Super Decathlon. Elgin has been featured in "PLANE AND PILOT" magazine with a fine treatment by Budd Davisson, and in a spectacular photo essay in the German publication "FLIEGER" (January, 1998, photos by Cornelius Braun). Elgin produced the EAA's SPORTAIR video on fabric covering for aircraft, along with the series of instructional videos on aircraft building techniques for ALEXANDER BUILD-TO-FLY (Griffin, GA). Elgin Wells Airshows proudly uses and endorses products provided by Oregon Aero. |
